Monthly bookkeeping is an ongoing accounting service that maintains accurate financial records for small businesses. Monaco CPA provides transaction categorization, bank reconciliation, monthly financial statements (P&L and balance sheet), and QuickBooks Online management starting at $300/month.

Clean, accurate books are the foundation of every good business decision. Monaco CPA provides monthly bookkeeping services that give you a clear picture of your financial health - so you can make confident decisions and stay compliant.

I use QuickBooks Online as the primary platform and am a Gold Certified ProAdvisor. Whether you need a fresh setup, a cleanup of messy books, or ongoing monthly management, I handle it all personally.

Every month you'll receive reconciled books and clear financial statements. No surprises at tax time. Industry research estimates the average small business overpays taxes by thousands per year due to bookkeeping errors — clean books prevent that.

**Monthly vs. weekly bookkeeping:** Most small businesses and solo professionals do well with monthly bookkeeping. All transactions are reconciled once a month and financial statements are delivered within the first two weeks of the following month. High-volume businesses, restaurants, or businesses with weekly payroll may benefit from weekly reconciliation to keep cash flow visibility current.

**Platform flexibility:** QuickBooks Online is the primary platform due to its integration ecosystem, bank feed reliability, and seamless handoff to tax preparation. [FreshBooks](/services/freshbooks) is ideal for service businesses, freelancers, and professionals who bill by time or project. Xero is a strong alternative for businesses that prefer its interface or use Xero-compatible apps. Evaluating which platform fits your volume, industry, and budget is part of the setup process, so you start on the right chart of accounts.

**Industries served:** Bookkeeping needs vary significantly by industry. Service businesses (consultants, therapists, freelancers) need clean revenue recognition and 1099 tracking. E-commerce businesses need inventory costing, marketplace fee reconciliation, and multi-state sales tax tracking. Restaurants need FICA tip credit tracking and cash-basis compliance. Construction businesses need job cost accounting and subcontractor 1099 management. The bookkeeping structure should be adapted to your industry from day one.

**NJ payroll tax obligations your books should track:** If your business has employees, your books need to properly track NJ Unemployment Insurance (NJ-927 quarterly), NJ family leave insurance (FLI), NJ disability insurance (TDI), NJ WF/SWF taxes, and local payroll taxes where applicable. Proper categorization of these withholdings from the start prevents year-end corrections and audit exposure.

**2026 1099-NEC threshold change:** Under OBBBA Section 70433, the 1099-NEC reporting threshold rises from $600 to $2,000 starting in 2026. This reduces paperwork for many small businesses that pay contractors smaller amounts, though the income is still taxable to the recipient regardless of whether a 1099 is issued.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need QuickBooks Online?
QuickBooks Online is strongly recommended — it's the most widely used small business accounting platform, has the best bank feed integrations, and makes CPA collaboration seamless. As a Gold Certified ProAdvisor, I provide the deepest level of QBO support. FreshBooks is also fully supported and is ideal for service businesses and freelancers. If you're on a different platform, I can discuss migration options during the assessment.
What if my books are a mess?
No judgment here. Messy books are one of the most common reasons businesses reach out. I offer bookkeeping cleanup (catch-up bookkeeping) to get your books current and accurate, whether you're behind by months or years. After cleanup, you can transition to monthly bookkeeping to keep everything on track going forward. Cleanup is priced at a flat rate after a free assessment — typical range is $750-$3,500 depending on the backlog.
How does monthly bookkeeping help with taxes?
When your books are clean and current throughout the year, tax preparation is faster, more accurate, and often results in better tax outcomes because nothing gets missed. Clean monthly books mean your CPA can identify tax planning opportunities (like retirement contributions, equipment purchases, or estimated tax adjustments) before year-end, when it's still possible to act on them. Businesses with clean books also pay less for tax preparation because the CPA doesn't have to reconstruct records.
How much does monthly bookkeeping cost?
Monthly bookkeeping at Monaco CPA starts at $300/month. The exact price depends on your transaction volume, number of bank and credit card accounts, and business complexity. Every engagement includes transaction categorization, bank reconciliation, and monthly P&L and balance sheet delivery. The monthly price is quoted after an initial assessment so you know exactly what to expect.
What industries do you specialize in for bookkeeping?
Monaco CPA provides bookkeeping services for small businesses across all industries, with particular expertise in service businesses (consultants, therapists, freelancers), e-commerce (Amazon FBA, Shopify, Etsy), restaurants and hospitality, construction and skilled trades, content creators, and professional practices (law firms, medical offices). The chart of accounts and bookkeeping structure is customized to your industry from day one.
Can you help with payroll too?
Yes. Payroll services are available as an add-on to monthly bookkeeping, starting at $100/month. This includes payroll processing, NJ payroll tax filings (NJ-927 quarterly), W-2 preparation, and 1099 issuance for contractors. Payroll entries are automatically integrated into your monthly books so everything stays in sync.
What's included in the monthly financial statements?
Each month you receive a Profit & Loss statement (income statement) and a Balance Sheet, both reviewed by a CPA. These statements show your revenue, expenses, net income, assets, liabilities, and equity. You'll also get a brief summary highlighting anything unusual or worth discussing. Statements are delivered within the first two weeks of the following month.
Do you offer weekly bookkeeping?
Yes. Most small businesses do well with monthly bookkeeping, but high-volume businesses, restaurants, and businesses with weekly payroll may benefit from weekly reconciliation to keep cash flow visibility current. Weekly bookkeeping is quoted based on your transaction volume.
How do I get started?
Start by requesting a free bookkeeping assessment. I'll review your current books (or lack thereof), discuss your needs, and send you a clear quote with a timeline. There's no obligation and no cost for the assessment. You can get started through the form at monacocpa.cpa/get-started or by emailing taxhelp@MonacoCPA.CPA.
What's the difference between a bookkeeper and a CPA for monthly bookkeeping?
A bookkeeper handles transaction categorization and reconciliation. A CPA doing your bookkeeping goes further — ensuring expenses are categorized in the most tax-advantageous way, identifying deductions you might be missing, coordinating with your tax preparation, and providing financial statements you can hand to a bank or investor. With Monaco CPA, your books and your taxes are handled by the same person, eliminating the communication gaps that cause year-end surprises.
